But the evening before that, the F.C.C. hosted the captain's nite during which the 7 referees were explained what the rules were. After that, the draw took place of the groups and matches.
Besides the early turn out of the teams, the Khmer sun was shining gloriously Saturday morning and proceedings got underway and it was no co-incidence that the Bayon Wanderers were first up against the brave ANZ team.
Surprisingly this second string Bayon side would go far, very far. Other strong teams were Acleda, Saigon Saints and the Hanoi Drink team. Another surprisingly strong team were Comin Khmere who managed to win Group A.
Because of the format (2 times 12 minutes) matches were close, though the Gasolina team managed to score four times in this brief period. Sunday's matches left still everything to fight for, Bayon Wanderers needing a draw up against the Saints in their final match with the Saints required to win.
Strange things happened, one of the fastest goals, saw Gasolina score from the half way line; the ball eventually rolling through the goalies legs. There were a pair of streakers, Cambodian style: fully clothed. A ref had a panic attack: could not find his cards, luckily the linesman had one!
After conclusion of the Sunday group matches, matches took place to determine final standings, while the top two of each group went through to the semi's. No less than 3 of the four semi's ended in penalties, but the lucky teams in the final were Bayon Wanderers and Acleda. This match also went down to the wire and well, if you want to know if Bayon ended up with the biggest Bayon at the afterparty at Gasolina, keep on reading!
Match reports Apsara Dancers
The Dancers' next match was against Royal Bassac.
Another known entity were the next opponent Acleda. The starting line-up was changed slightly, though the same play was shown with Apsara pressing the Acleda players with their backs to their own goal. Chances were created, though the Apsara forwards missed them all. The dominance of the Apsara team was so high during the first three matches, that Laurent, the goalie, only had five times the ball over these matches, from which two were a pass back and one resulting in the goal of the Bassac team. The final score was 0-0 and it looked like that the Apsara Dancers were not able to win a match.
The second day started the same as it ended the first day for the Apsara Dancers. It is a little boring, though Apsara again dominated the game against Bon Café from the first till the last minute. However, the forwards did not meet up to the expectations and the match finished in a disappointing 0-0 score. Both teams were now depending on the results of the other teams to see them through to the semi-finals.A victory agaianst the top of the group Hanoi Drink Team with minimum three goals was required by the Apsara Dancers if they wanted to have a chance to make it to the semi-finals. Even then it was waiting for the results of the other games. However, the Apsara Dancers never looked like to score three goals, though they dominated again the match. It was only when Bo was sent off with a yellow card, that Hanoi Drink team could play more on the half of the Apsara team. The score finished as it started, 0-0, giving the Hanoi Drink team their desired semi-final spot, while the Apsara Dancers got the disappointing third place in Group B
The 5th place play-off saw all the substitutes of the Apsara Dancers playing against the Saigon Saints Minsk Search and Destroy. The dominance of the Apsara team was not that huge as in previous matches, though the Apsara defense was able to neutralise the Saints attackers in a satisfying way, preventing them to score. It was a balanced game and the Apsara team managed to get the balance going their side when Baba finally found the net when he headed a cross from John into the nets for a 1-0 score. The second half Phyrun came in as a centre forward, as he tried to show the Apsara attackers how to score. A fluent attack initiated by Phyrun himself, brought Phyrun in an eye-to-eye situation with the Saints goalie, though he only managed to hit the cross-bar. (from 2 m. out!) It is not that easy to score!! Final result was 1-0 for the Apsara Dancers.
Having the best players in a team does not mean that it will be the best team. The Apsara Dancers with their surplus of technical and physical skills dominated all their matches for 80% of the time with sometimes really good football, though they were not able to win the matches. If you don’t score, you don’t win games.
Match reports Bayon Wanderers
Up next were the FCC. With the sun at it's zenith the Bayon Wanderers breezed onto the pitch, to gather their next scalp. With a couple of changes and a 2-0 under their belt they were eager to continue to delve this vein of form. Defensively the Wanderers held up great, but attacking prowess were far and few between. It was eventually Liugi the 'bull' who made the difference. A rare corner was taken by Isaac, who probably injured himself in the process putting so much power into the corner. The ball rocketed into the penalty area, anyone silly enough to touch would pay with an injury, but not so Liugi, a light hop and he took the ball on his head and it ricochet straight into the top-corner! One-nil for Bayon!
Four hours later the next match, Bayon against Comin Khmer. A known identity and Bayon played as before. Leaning heavily on a defense who had not conceded a goal, though one might wonder whether that was due to the defense or due to our team hero Tim. the pace of the match was less than could be expected and it was on one of the meanders upfront that Doug decided to let loose a shot. Diagonally accross the goal his shot ended up unreachable in the top corner. And yet again enough to carry the team on.
Sunday morning, the business end of the tournament. Yet again Bay
Gasolina, so a loss was not on the cards. The first chances were for Bayon who settled in well, though Gasolina remained a threat. The final result was a nil-nil draw which still gave Bayon the best of chances to get to the semi's.
Next were the all white Saints. They needed a win to get through, while Bayon could manage to end second with a draw. Bayon had the advantage that Laurent was in the Saints goal, even worse Laurent was in form this weekend. For Bayon Tim was back on duty. Tempers frayed as the physical game of the Saints was answered and just before half time both teams were momentarily with 10 men after Frank and his opponent received yellows. However the Saints were not able to overcome Papo and Laurent was just too serious at the other end, so another nil-nil. But .... Bayon ended second in their group!
Well, noone had thought of this scenario, Bayon in the semi's against the Hanoi Drink Team, who arguably were the best team at the tournament. But Bayon just continued doggedly defending while our opponents were constantly on the look-out for when Conor, Nelly or Daniel would threaten, but bayon were consistent and a third nil-nil was the result: penalties! Bayon won the toss and Conor slotted home the first strike. Hanoi's first was stopped but Nelly decided to keep the shoot out exciting as the hanoi team keeper maintained his excellent form and tipped Nelly's effort over. An equalizer ensued but Doug put the third of the keepers reach and Tim has an easy save: Bayon to the finals!
Not to bore the readers, but Bayon failing to score all day were up against Acleda who had made it through on a penalty shoot out as well. Acleda were a much faster side but played a less physical game. Initially the teams looked even, but after half time Acleda came close several times and with alittle relief bayon once more raked up a nil-nil! Penalty shoot out. Both first penalties were not converted. Nelly insisted on making up for his previous mistake: but on no, he missed this time! Acleda went 1-0 up before Doug brought the equalizer. Tim then stopped the third Acleda penalty, round two of the shoot out! Then Liugi stepped forward but missed and though Tim had a hand to the final penalty of the tournament it still went over the line much to the joy of our opponents Acleda!

Besides the financial sponsors and participating teams without the following persons, the tournament would not have been a succes. Especially Billy Barnaart who was instrumental and constantly was trying to keep the tournament on rails. And Billy comes with family both Pisey and Lara unselfishly helped out. Laurent did much of the sponsor work, Phirun assisted with Khmer authorities, got t-shirts and krama's printed and managed to deliver on the prizes. Ben LeGrand put in some extra effort in the catering and contacts with beer and soda companies. Rick tried to manage the finance, while his wife Karien sold Corona all day Sunday. Carlos single-handedly rolled out the tournament guide. Dore got the web-site on board. Alex delt with the press, Conor and Dr. Nich got medical assistance and Matt bought some new balls as well as arranged the masseuses of Blue 7 and put together a photo document of all teams. Sidon was pinpoint man for tents and accessories as well as the only person still working during the after-party!
